a long established New York art gallery we produced 5 copies of this folio
size book, specially printed on arches cover paper, photograph illustrations
laid in "passe partout" frames, bound in full dark green Chieftain, 22kt

Preservation
boxes need not be plain, here is one done for Karl Lagerfeld to protect
a copy of Sonia Delaunay "27 Tableaux Vivants". It is done in a modern
3/4 light blue reverse Oasis, stamped in white, with a reproduction done
on a light paper in watercolors of one of Delaunay's drawing.
This
copy of "The Making of the African Queen" was commissioned for Miss Hepburn.
The design echoed my client's wishes: "don't make it look too serious".
Bound in maroon Oasis, the cover sports a line design wrapped around the
whole cover and blocked in 22kt gold. The book is housed in a full maroon
Oasis box with a rounded
spine and modern raised bands, stamped in 22kt gold.
"Les
Eglogues de Virgil", a French artist book adorned with wood blocks by Aristide
Maillol, is bound in black Oasis. The enamel on copper inserted in the
front cover was inspired by a Maillol design from the book. The 22kt gold
tooled spine is kept simple in contrast to the cover.
The following 2 examples incorporate part of the original cover in the new design. This can be done on books with covers in bad shape:
On
a collection of programs from the "Ballet Russes", I inserted what was
salvageable from the original cover in a new tan Oasis leather binding,
with an onlaid floriated vine on the left of the front cover . The title
on the spine is blind stamped from an engraved plate designed in the same
style as the type used for the original cover.
For
the same client, this Inedited Works of Leon Bakst was designed with the
goal of keeping the design of the original paper cover. The new full black
Oasis binding has insets in the form of Moorish windows in which the original
figure of a reading boy is sitting on a background of bone Calf, embellished
at the bottom third by a semi of 22kt gold dots. Pictured here are 2 of
the 3 similar bindings commissioned by my client.
This
set of the Works of Edgar Allan Poe is bound in 1/2 light brown Chieftain

A
